20th Anniversary Celebration of Jugend Eine Welt in Vienna with strong Salesian presence

The dynamic Austrian Non-Profit Organization supports mainly SDB and FMA projects in the Global South / The celebration focused on deep gratitude for donors and supporters

On 12 May 2017 "Jugend Eine Welt - Don Bosco Aktion Österreich" celebrated their 20th anniversary in the Don Bosco House of Vienna together with more than 300 guests. The aid organization was founded in 1997 by Reinhard Heiserer, a former development worker in Ecuador, P. Petrus Obermüller, who at that time was in charge of the Salesian Youth Ministry and is today Provincial of the Salesians in Austria, as well as by several other Salesians and friends of Don Bosco.

Since then, Jugend Eine Welt supported more than 2.700 projects by the motto "Education overcomes poverty", partnering globally in first line with the Salesians of Don Bosco and Don Bosco Sisters. In his speech during the ceremonial act, Jugend Eine Welt director Reinhard Heiserer expressed his deep gratitude to all donors, supporters and benefactors for their generous contribution of 70 million Euro since the foundation of the aid organization. These donations made numerous important projects possible and enabled long-term programs for boys and girls from the poorest backgrounds to give them the chance of a better life.

      Birthday greetings from international guests
Jugend Eine Welt thanked for numerous birthday greetings coming from Don Bosco partners around the world and was very happy to welcome several international guests of honor at the ceremonial act in Vienna, amongst them P. Marcelo Farfan SDB from IUS International and former Provincial of Ecuador; P. Michael Karikunnel SDB, Provincial from Ghana; P. George Matthew SDB from DBTech/India; Br. Lothar Wagner SDB from Liberia/Sierra Leone; Sr. Maria Rohrer FMA from Tunesia; Hans-Jürgen Dörrich from Don Bosco Mondo, Germany, and Juan Pablo Salgado from the Salesian Polytechnic University (UPS) in Ecuador.

Mass of Thanksgiving with young volunteers
On Saturday 13 May, P. Petrus Obermüller, together with Salesians from Austria and abroad, celebrated a joyful Mass of thanksgiving. The excellent musical accompaniment was provided by a group of young future volunteers. Since the foundation of Jugend Eine Welt in 1997, 600 young people from Austria could be sent to Don Bosco projects worldwide. Until 2012, the volunteers program was organized by Jugend Eine Welt; in 2013 responsibility was transferred to "VOLONTARIAT bewegt" , a joint initiative of Jugend Eine Welt and the Salesians of Don Bosco in Austria.

      Future Challenges
After having sucessfully installed "WeltWegWeiser", an Austrian wide service point for international volunteer assignments, Jugend Eine Welt is now investing in volunteer programs for adults and senior citizens. On top of the list of the vibrant non profit organization is also support of various Civil Society initiatives and networks in Austria as well as fair and ethical investments.

In the near future, particular focus will be put on the further development of the new "Jugend Eine Welt Foundation" which was established in 2016. Reinhard Heiserer: "Since the foundation of Jugend Eine Welt in 1997, our main task is to build bridges between the unique Don Bosco network of SDB and FMA and friends and benefactors who are ready to support it. We are extremely grateful that we had the chance to open many doors, enable many possibilities and make the message of Don Bosco better known in Austria.

Bearing in mind the huge challenges the world faces today, support for children and young people in need as well as political engagement fighting for global justice are more necessary than ever before. As a Don Bosco NPO, Jugend Eine Welt is not only focusing on charity and providing emergency aid, but sees it also as a core mission to denounce causes of poverty and injustice as well as to fight together with other like-minded groups for a better ONE world."
